SAP S/4HANA vs the alternatives: how to compare them fairly
S/4HANA is the default path for ECC customers, and for some the right one. A structured way to compare it with leaving SAP, on evidence rather than vendor positioning.

For an ECC customer, S/4HANA is the path of least organisational resistance and SAP's maintained future, with a commitment to the end of 20401. A fair comparison with the alternatives starts from what the company actually runs, not from either side's marketing.
Why the comparison is hard
ECC estates are rarely standard. In the ASUG survey, customisations were the second-largest barrier to migration (44%), after business process change (49%)2. Those barriers exist whichever system a company moves to. ISG found that 49% of SAP migrations carry out little or no re-engineering and that nearly 60% are delayed and over budget3, which suggests the choice of target matters less than how the move is run.

When S/4HANA is the better choice
When the company's processes depend on SAP-specific functionality, when its partners and staff are deeply skilled in SAP, or when the group mandates SAP across subsidiaries. In those cases the questions above still apply, but the switching cost of leaving SAP is likely to exceed the benefit.
When an alternative is the better choice
When the ECC estate is mostly finance, distribution and straightforward production for a mid-sized company, the published prices of Business Central, Acumatica's unlimited-user model or Odoo's per-user suite can change the arithmetic8149. When the estate is large and manufacturing-heavy, Dynamics 365 and Infor LN are the closest functional matches.
Where the operational work fits
Either path leaves the same daily work around the ERP: orders by email, purchase orders, supplier follow-up and quality paperwork. A scoring sequence
- Write a demo script from three of your own end-to-end processes, including one custom one.
- Run it with S/4HANA and two alternatives, scored by the people who run those processes.
- Price each over five years, including SAP's extended maintenance if the move lands after 2027.
- Choose the option with the smallest gap between demo and reality, not the longest feature list.

Questions buyers ask
Is moving to S/4HANA easier than switching to another ERP?
Not necessarily. Both involve data migration, process change and testing. Staying with SAP keeps familiar concepts and partners, but the ASUG survey found business process change was the greatest barrier for 49% of members, and customisations for 44%, which apply to either path.
Which ERP is closest to SAP ECC in scope?
Among the alternatives we reviewed, Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management and Infor LN are closest for large manufacturing estates. Dynamics 365 documents mixed-mode production and actual and standard costing, and Infor LN runs multi-site operations from a single instance.
Do SAP alternatives have AI agents?
Some do today. Business Central has a documented Sales Order Agent with human review, and Epicor's Prism agents are generally available in Kinetic in the UK and Europe. NetSuite announced agentic workflows in 2025. Dynamics 365 Premium licences include Copilot Credits for agents.
